WHAT THEY SAY
Bonus SEIKO 5 SPORTS Automatic Strap Watch SNZG15J1 Mens
Love this watch, well built and reasonable reserve electric power, it hasn’t quit yet, mine is a little fast although not a big issue.
This is a great access into automatic designer watches, the Seiko movements has a long history of stability.
Great watch that emerged promptly. It exceeded my objectives. Fit and carry out was beautiful. Well packed. The watch helps to keep excellent time right out of the box.
A hi-tech, 23 jewels, automatic movement defines the Seiko Auto Sports and makes it its classic status. This analog watch is guaranteed by 23 jewels; the hands are luminous and silver-toned while baton hour-markers add extra awareness. The watch also shows day and resists water for up to 100 feet. An ideal watch out for a circular of beach volleyball, the silver-toned stainless steel hyperlink bracelet will carry it in place.
SEIKO 5 – the meaning of the “5” An excellent marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5):
- Water resistant,
- Shock resistant,
Please be aware that some SEIKO 5’s are in fact SEIKO 4’s, if the “Day” function is omitted, then your Caliber 7S25 can be used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel.
Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Activities often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is comparable to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels instead of the 21 Jewels in the 7S26.
Please note that these movements conquer for a price of 21’600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second).
As a contrast, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28’800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21’600 bph.
Why do you speak about these three motions?
Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic designer watches. A market show that is huge, yet challenged nowadays (2006) by a growing share of inexpensive China Made automated movements An automatic watch (also known as a self-winding watch) is a mechanised watch, typically with an equilibrium steering wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer’s arm, instead of needing to be wound by hand every day.
Whereas a quartz watch is driven by electricity, a mechanical watch is run by the mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time.
THE CASE AND CRYSTAL
For SNK admirers who wish those watch circumstances were bigger, the hang on is finally over. The SNZG15 measures a strong 42 mm and is also 12 mm solid. That means its measurements are bigger than the old-style men’s watches, but is noticeably smaller than the outrageously huge wrist watches you commonly see today.
The top case includes a brushed finish, as well as refined finish off on the edges. The crystal is Seiko’s own hardlex crystal, which is incredibly scratch resistant. It is also water resistant up to 100 meters.
The dial design seems a lttle bit busy, although it does have a fairly nice arrangement which makes everything still readable. The outer ring shows the visible numbered markings, while an internal ring provides armed forces time. The day and night out info is presented at the 3 o’clock position.
The hour and minute hands are substantial with a pointy end, while the second hand is just a good sliver. The dark-colored dial offsets the hands and markers nicely. The lume is great, as it glows brightly for 7 or 8 hours.
The automatic mechanical 7S36 watch motion is appropriate and reliable, with variances which range from -20 mere seconds to +40 mere seconds a day. It doesn’t quite equate to the best Swiss and Japanese automated movements, but also for an entry level watch it’s more than sufficient.
It provides a master rate of 21600 BPH, which means you don’t get the distinctive ticking from a quartz watch that can be annoying at night when everything’s peaceful. There is a 40-hour electric power reserve and that means you may take it off during the night and never have to worry that it’ll stop working.
This is possibly the weakest hyperlink in the Seiko 5 SNZG15, and it’s the key reason why the SNZG15 is a few dollars cheaper than the Seiko 5 SNZG13. The 22 mm nylon strap can feel somewhat too hard initially, and you will need some time to break it in. It will get the job done sufficiently eventually though.
For some, the nylon looks quite cheap so it doesn’t match the tranquil selling point of the Seiko 5 SNZG15. But with NATO or leather straps you can simply buy in stores and online, it’ll look much better.
PROS & CONS Bonus SEIKO 5 SPORTS Automatic Strap Watch SNZG15J1 Mens
Basically, what we’ve here is an entry level military services field watch, and it’s rugged functionality and design are excellent.
The dial provides info easily, and even during the night there is no problem telling the time. The hands are brightly luminous in the dark, and it doesn’t fade for many hours.
The accuracy and reliability is good enough for most people.
The “provenance” (history), is nice, as it goes back to an earlier era when watches such as these were worn on the field of challenge.
How big is the case is ideal for those with bigger wrists, but even for common wrists it generally does not really look too large.
For the nylon strap disadvantage, for some that it is nice enough to wear as is. But for the most part, people don’t buy the Seiko 5 SNZG15 for the strap. You can simply change the strap to NATO or leather and that should improve its look even more.
